Welcome to the challenge
a message from the chief
Dear Participants and Families,
On behalf of the New Mexico State Police, I am proud to welcome you to Challenge 2026. This event represents the highest level of professionalism, technical skill, and commitment to roadway safety demonstrated by our Commercial Vehicle Enforcement personnel.
Commercial motor vehicle enforcement is essential to public safety. Each year, thousands of crashes nationwide involve large trucks and buses, many resulting in serious injuries or fatalities. National data consistently shows that factors such as driver fatigue, mechanical defects, improper cargo securement, and hazardous materials violations contribute significantly to these incidents. Through thorough inspections and enforcement, our officers and transportation inspectors play a direct role in reducing these risks before they lead to tragedy.
Challenge 2026 is designed to test and showcase the expertise required to perform this work at the highest level. Participants will demonstrate their knowledge and proficiency in Level I inspections, hazardous materials enforcement, and passenger carrier safety—skills that are critical to maintaining safe highways across New Mexico and beyond.
Top competitors from the CVE Bureau will go on to represent the New Mexico State Police at the North American Inspectors Championship (NAIC) in August 2026 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This event brings together the most skilled inspectors from across North America and sets the standard for excellence in commercial vehicle safety enforcement.
I would also like to recognize our sponsors and partners whose continued support makes this event possible. Your contributions play a vital role in strengthening our mission and supporting those who serve in this field.
To all participants, thank you for your continued dedication and professionalism. Your work has a measurable impact on roadway safety and the protection of the communities we serve.
Sincerely,
Matthew Broom
Interim Chief
New Mexico State Police
